World Refugee Day Pre-election Rally and March

June 17, 2016

Join the Refugee Action Collective Queensland and hundreds of others at this World Refugee Day event.

Together, we'll make a strong, clear, collective demand that the Nauru and Manus Island detention hellholes be closed immediately and that the people there be brought to Australia.

Now is the time!

11am Saturday 18th June

King George Square Brisbane

We want to see an end to the government's cruel asylum seeker and refugee policies, both onshore and offshore.

If we turn out in huge numbers this weekend before World Refugee Day, and half way through this federal election campaign, we'll keep the pressure on!

We can send the strongest message yet to the government and the opposition, clearly expressing the widespread community revulsion towards their vicious, immoral policies that harm innocent people seeking safety from persecution.

We are having an effect.

Massive community opposition was mobilised to stop forced returns to Nauru, as the Baby Asha, Lady Cilento Hospital vigil and the #LetThemStay campaign proved.

Hundreds of churches stood in defiance of the government to offer #sanctuary to people at threat of being moved back into offshore detention

The PNG Supreme Court has determined that the Manus Island detention centre is illegal and compensation cases are currently being worked on.

The Australian Women in Support of Women on Nauru Report, Protection Denied: Abuse Condoned, outlined irrefutable evidence of abuse and exploitation of women and children on Nauru. Their campaign to petition PM Malcolm Turnbull for removal of all asylum seekers and refugees from Nauru and Manus Island gathered thousands of signatures.

Comments by Peter Dutton maligning refugees and asylum seekers were categorically condemned by a majority of people in the mainstream and social media.

Thousands of people are aware of the government's brutal policies, designed to deter through harmful treatment of people who've come seeking help. And thousands of people are saying NO MORE.

We need to mobilise and give voice to the people being harmed in our name.

We need to keep up the pressure.

The government has already deported several people from Brisbane detention centre to Nauru, one of whom, Hodan, self immolated and remains in a critical condition.

Many others are suffering poor living conditions, illness and abuse, and some have died.

Now is the time to keep the pressure on.

Let's turn out in our hundreds to demand that the Nauru and Manus Island detention centres be immediately closed and that the people who have been abandoned there are brought to Australia now.

Now is the time!
