New Australians living in South-East Queensland, and with experience in carpentry and construction, are being offered a life-changing chance to obtain a trade qualification.
Group Training Organisation, East Coast Apprenticeships (ECA), has launched a Refugee VET (Vocational Education and Training) Program specifically designed to provide adult apprenticeships to Refugee and Humanitarian visa holders.
Family and friends of eligible candidates are urged to encourage them to apply. A language-free assessment tool, Q Test, will be used in the selection process and final training will be in a paid adult apprenticeship.
The first intake of the Refugee VET Program will offer carpentry apprenticeships to candidates from within South-East Queensland.
Applicants will ideally have previous experience in construction and a knowledge of hand and power tools.
Requirements:
To be eligible, candidates must satisfy the definition of Australian refugee or humanitarian entrant, be approved for permanent Australian residency, have adequate language and comprehension skills, as well as a vehicle and driver’s license.
Under the Refugee VET program, candidates will have existing construction skills formally recognised and credited towards an apprenticeship. They will then complete gap training required to become a qualified tradesperson.
ECA aims to address difficulties faced by Refugee and Humanitarian Entrants in gaining sustainable employment. ECA research failed to identify any existing structured pathway into trade careers for these newest Australians.
