February 4 2016 Refugee Action Coalition MEDIA ALERT SYDNEY REFUGEE PROTEST CALLS FOR GOVERNMENT TO “LET THEM STAY” Protests around the country will today, and tomorrow, are calling for the government to let the 267 asylum seekers from Nauru and Manus stay in Australia. The Sydney protest will be held at 12.30pm Thursday 4 February, Immigration Office, Lee Street, City. (Details of other cities below) Speakers will include: NSW Greens MP Mehreen Faruqi; Gaby Judd, Grandmothers Against Detention of Refugee Children; Julie Macken (Women Supporting Women on Nauru); Mohsen Soltani, Iranian refugee; Ken Canning (Indigenous Social Justice Association); Refugee Action Coalition. “Community calls are growing for the government to do the right thing and let asylum seekers who are in Australia, stay where they can get the community support and the medical help and the security they need,” said Ian Rintoul, spokesperson for the Refugee Action Coalition. “These asylum seekers were brought to Australia because Nauru does not have the medical facilities to look after them and because their lives in limbo on Nauru has robbed them of hope and damaged their mental health.” One refugee on Nauru told the Refugee Action Coalition, “Nauru is too bad. It is making us crazy. Everyone is taking tablets. Every day. I ran away from Somalia, but here is just like Somalia.
